Priority Issue 2 For the Sake of the Global EnvironmentEfforts in manufacturing

KOSÉ makes continuous efforts to care for the global environment in various aspects of its production activities, including the implementation of measures to reduce industrial waste and energy consumption to mitigate global warming and prevent environmental pollution.

Reduction of industrial waste

Environmental goals (indicators)

We are implementing a three-year plan containing specific environmental goals (indicators) based on the results in fiscal 2012.

  • Three-year plan to reduce the amount of industrial waste generated in the production process to 98.5% (basic unit) of the fiscal 2012 level by fiscal 2015.
  • We promote*, continue and manage recycling.

* Recycling rate of ≥ 99.5%

Composition of industrial waste and promotion of recycling

KOSÉ’s basic policy is to avoid simple disposal as much as possible and instead recycle our waste. More than 99.9% of our industrial waste is recycled to be used for reprocessed plastic, compost and fuel. In fiscal 2014, however, we failed to achieve our target due to the planned disposal of inert materials. Waste at all worksites is sorted out into recyclable or non-recyclable prior to collection to improve the recycling rate and reduce industrial waste.

Promotion of recycling

KOSÉ’s manufacturing sites place emphasis on recycling with the aim of using recycled materials for the benefit of society, rather than simply disposing of generated waste. The greatest efforts are focused on material recycling, combined with chemical and thermal recycling, to minimize landfill waste and simple disposal. Based on this basic policy, each worksite is required to sort out waste into recyclable or non-recyclable prior to collection to improve the recycling rate and reduce industrial waste. We regularly review recycling companies and visit waste treatment firms for on-site inspection to ensure proper waste treatment.

(Note)
Material recycling: Materials are recycled back to their original forms. (e.g., from plastic to plastic, from paper to paper)
Chemical recycling: Materials are recycled and chemically changed into something different from their original forms for use.
Thermal recycling: Materials are recycled to be used for heat generation.

Energy saving

Environmental goals (indicators)

We are implementing a three-year plan containing specific environmental goals (indicators) based on the results in fiscal 2012.

Target for reduction of CO2 emissions and result

Our goal is to reduce CO2 emissions in the production process to 97% of the fiscal 2012 level by fiscal 2015 (the target reduction for a single fiscal year is 1%).
In fiscal 2014, we successfully achieved the reduction of 475 (kg/1,000 dozen), significantly exceeding the target of 480 (kg/1,000 dozen).
